Who are we?
Our team
The Department of Business and European Law currently employs 13 teachers, of which 2 are full professors, 4 associate professors, and 7 assistant professors holding a Ph.D. or a CSc. degree. Associate Professor Nicole Grmelová is head of the department as of January 1, 2021.
Our mission
The mission of the Department of Business and European Law is not limited to transmitting knowledge of a wide range of binding legal regulations governing the business environment in the Czech Republic and the European Union. It also strives for disseminating ethical codes and the concept of sustainable development while teaching about running a business. Graduates can use the acquired knowledge and skills in the field of legal regulation of the business environment in their managerial decisions in practice.
Our graduates
Graduates of the follow-up master’s program in Business and Law usually find their jobs in the field compliance experts, they hold different positions in corporate practice, including those of in-house lawyers. Some alumni work as officials for the state public administration or engage in running their own business.
Our study programmes
In addition to the main specialization of the follow-up master’s program “Business and Law” (in Czech), the department also offers a new minor specialization “Compliance, Risk and Governance (2CG)”, which will be taught entirely in English probably starting from the winter term of the academic year 2022/23. The Ph.D. study program “Commercial and International Economic Law” is currently offered in the Czech language only.
Our external footprint
Many members of the department run their own law firms or work as in-house lawyers. This allows them to share with the students real case studies and discuss the possibilities of their possible solutions.
Concerning the state administration, some teachers (prof. Dědič and prof. Marková) participate in the preparation of the legislative process of the Czech Republic as members of the Legislative Council of the Government.
Associate Professor Grmelová cooperates with the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in the implementation of the Czech Republic’s strategy aimed at preparing those interested in working for the EU bodies and institutions as officials or temporary agents.
Cooperation with practice is also reflected in the participation of experts in direct teaching in courses provided by the Department of Business and European Law. These are, for example, officials of the European Commission, officials of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and business managers specializing in ethics and compliance.
Some members of the department also provide counseling to entrepreneurs and representatives of municipalities in terms of obtaining European subsidies.
